Congress, Please Keep Your Medicare Promises to Our Seniors
May 4, 2017| CATEGORIES: Specialty Pharmacy , Press Mention

This opinion article featured in The Hill is authored by Rebecca Shanahan, CEO of Avella Specialty Pharmacy and President of the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP).

Medicare was created in 1966 as a promise to protect our seniors. But the security of aging Americans is increasingly threatened.

Here’s how Medicare Part D is supposed to work: seniors go to the pharmacy of their choosing, exchange their co-pay for medications, and pay a monthly premium toward a Part D insurance plan that is administered by a pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). Unfortunately, big PBMs — the private insurers who sell Medicare Part D plans to seniors — are rigging the system by imposing unfair “direct and indirect remuneration fees,” or DIR fees.

No Easy Road: The Psychology of Entrepreneurship
April 20, 2017| CATEGORIES: Press Mention

Entrepreneurs, both immigrants and American-born, have built America from the ground up into the world economic power that it is today. We can all recall some of the names of our nation’s greatest self-starters: Henry Ford, Bill Gates, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs and Rebecca Shanahan (Avella Specialty Pharmacy, 2014 revenue: $800 million), just to name a few.

From Henry Ford’s assembly-line production, which transformed American life when he put a car in nearly every garage to Bill Gates who founded Microsoft, they all possess remarkable similarities: mental toughness, strong discipline, intelligence, perseverance, confidence, vision, creativity and a fierce drive to succeed. In fact, we tend to idolize these fiercely-driven individuals because they perpetuate the American ideal, which is that in America, anything is possible-with hard work.

Misleading Latex Labeling May Contribute to Allergic Reactions

Surgical gloves, syringes, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, vial stoppers, injection ports — these are just some of the commonly used OR items containing natural latex that could trigger a serious allergic reaction in your staff and patients. You may have attempted to reduce exposure by adopting "latex-free" alternatives, but can you be sure those alternatives are truly safe? Not according to the authors of a new white paper, "Latex Free Claims: A White Paper on the Risks Associated with Latex Allergies and Latex in Healthcare," who explain why healthcare products bearing the term "latex free," "does not contain natural rubber latex" or "does not contain latex" may not be exactly as advertised.

For many patients with rare diseases, reaching the first step of an accurate diagnosis can be a lengthy journey, riddled with pain, difficulty, and trial and error—and that’s before they begin the challenge of fighting and treating their conditions.

Once diagnosed, patients with rare diseases often face a new set of challenges: affordability, adherence to complex regimens, side effect management, and coordination of follow-up appointments that may involve providers far from home. And yet, innovative therapies are emerging that offer patients, including those who had previously exhausted all other options, new opportunities for improved health outcomes.

Going the Extra Mile to Engage Patients
February 22, 2017| CATEGORIES: Patients , Press Mention

Having a diagnosis requiring a specialty medication “can be very overwhelming, especially if the diagnosis is related to a rare or complex disease,” said Kelly Mathews, PharmD, CSP, the director of clinical services for Avella, in a telephone interview. “[Patients] may not have ever heard of their condition before or know anyone else who has gone through that experience. They may or may not have family support, may be in a rural area where it’s challenging to get connected to other patients or may have difficulties getting back to their doctor’s office, depending on how far away they live. Our specialty pharmacists help engage patients through different programs to address all of these issues and help them take these complex medications from home.”
