The Apothecary Shops Founder and CEO, John Musil, Pharm.D, was named CEO of the Year among private companies at the Arizona Corporate Excellence Awards, which honors Arizona’s largest and fastest-growing private companies.
The ninth annual awards, presented by The Business Journal, recognize private companies and their CEOs based on growth of their business, innovative approaches, community involvement, dedication to company employees and leadership accomplishments.
Musil, who purchased his first pharmacy in 1996 when he was 25, has guided The Apothecary Shops’ growth to include 16 retail locations in six states with pharmacists available 24 hours a day seven days a week, a national distribution business and 250 employees who consult with patients, doctors and nurse practitioners in a range of specialty areas about the most effective drug therapies.
The Apothecary Shops was recently ranked number 1640 on the Inc. 5000 list, a jump of 754 spots from 2010. In Arizona, The Apothecary Shops ranks No. 20 on the top 50 private companies list and No. 5 on the fast-growth list.
“I am overwhelmed by this honor,” Musil said. “The Apothecary Shops focus on special disease states that require extra special touches for our patients. Our basic core principle is in delivering and dispensing excellence. If we fail in either, we fail our patients and the other people important to us. I want to make sure our patients are taken care of and that our staff understands the importance we place on taking care of the people we serve.”
Musil, a Phoenix native, graduated from the University of Arizona as a Doctor of Pharmacy. He and his wife, Carey, have three children and he is involved with a number of nonprofit organizations including Scottsdale Healthcare, Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, American Liver Foundation and the Desert Youth Hockey Association.
The Apothecary Shops is the nation’s foremost chain of full-service specialty pharmacies with specialties in fertility, women’s health, oncology, ophthalmology, infectious disease, pain management, transplant, veterinary medicine and compounding.
